Dr. Errol Vishnu Ramsaroop’s study on vocational and technical education highlights the critical role of TVET in driving economic development in Trinidad and Tobago. His research emphasizes the need for TVET systems to adapt to changing labor market demands, focusing on equipping individuals with skills relevant to high-growth industries like energy, manufacturing, and technology. Ramsaroop identifies key areas for improvement, including updating curricula to align with global standards, fostering stronger collaborations between educational institutions and industries, and increasing access to vocational training for underserved populations.
The study also underscores how modernized TVET can address unemployment and underemployment, particularly among youth, while supporting national economic diversification efforts. By promoting innovation and entrepreneurship through vocational education, Ramsaroop argues that Trinidad and Tobago can reduce its dependency on oil and gas, fostering a more resilient and sustainable economy. His work provides a strategic roadmap for aligning TVET with the country’s long-term socio-economic goals.

Dr. Ramsaroop’s study is indeed interesting. In his paper, which sourced responses from a selected group of industry experts, they rank-ordered sixty statements and “access to, and quality of VTE” was deemed the most important. The “access to” part is very interesting. I wonder how this would line up with the diminishing of GATE funding in recent years.
